POSSUM SKIN WORKSHOP

Mildura, January 2026

This special workshop aimed to create a possum skin cloak to celebrate Treaty! All First Peoples artists, Elders and cultural knowledge holders were wlecome.

The project brought together possum skins with designs and motifs from communities across Victoria. They were be used to make two Treaty Cloaks for ceremonial use by Gellung Warl, the First Peoples’ representative body established by the Treaty.

The workshop began with a Smoking Ceremony and and then taught skills in cloak creation. Participants developed designs, cut and burn skins and use all necessary equipment for drawing, burning and etching.
